Hebrew Notes:

Schaff defines four Hebrew words for man: adam—ruddy or fair, ish—husband, geber—strong, methim—mortal (prone to sickness and death).

Unger defines adam as "of the earth."

Fausset defines enosh as "wretched man."

< mytim;> mortal (Isaiah 41:14, Psalm 26:4, and Job 11:11)

Hamilton comments, "Of the twenty-three occurrences of the root in the Bible it is not impossible that some of them may be, in fact, derived from the verb mut ‘to die’ "

Waltke gives, "owner, possessor"

Brown-Driver-Briggs : "the soul, the inner being"

McComiskey comments, "One of the most common usages of ish is in the sense of ‘husband’ "

McComiskey tells us its possible verb form means "to be weak, sick...the word frequently emphasizes man’s frailty and humanness...."

Coppes gives, "man as weak and vulnerable"

Wilson: "applied to a male child because the memory of the father was thereby preserved in the genealogy of the family."

Other scriptures from the Psalms concerning what a man should be.

Psalm 18:25, "With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright."

Psalm 25:12, "What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose."

Psalm 34:8, "O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him."

Psalm 37:37. "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace."

Psalm 40:4, "Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies."

.Psalm 58:11, "So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth."

Psalm 62:12, "Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work."

Psalm 112:1, "Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments."
